Thinking of colouring your hair? Nervous about the end result? Why am I not surprised. Coming from a person who actually believed the drivel on TV and thought purple dye will result in purple hair (it doesnt..the closest shade is turbid brown) this comes straight from the heart.
A bad dye job, well you DO live, you know .......so if you are sufficiently crazy here is what you have to keep in mind. Remember, self-application is NOT easy. LOreal is supposedly the least messy of the lot and is pretty popular with college hotties. Save up to get the dirty job done at a decent hairdressers. But then if you are as kadka as this writer you are bound to experiment at home. Well, for that you need a pal to help, lots of newspapers, a strong floor cleaner to get rid of stubborn stains and guts of steel to stomach a ghastly result (perhaps).
TEMP OR PERMANENT - THE Eternal Dilemma The stuff you can do at home, with moderate success rates, are all semi-permanent jobs. Yup, LOreal (ExcellenceCreme), Sunsilk (Pro-Colour), Garnier (Nutrisse), Revlon (ColourSilk) are all semi-permanent. While temp jobs, such as hair mascara wash off with one shampoo session, semi-permanent dyes lasts for about 12 shampoo rinses. It all depends on hair texture, the shampoo used..blah..blah so you might just be one of the lucky few whose semi-permanent colour lasts for 5 months. Dont wash your hair at all :) Permanent colour stays put but the roots need retouching every few months - Wella Permanent, Igora, Keune and LOreal are good. Permanent colours are usually sold in bulk to parlours wonly. There are too many bottles and the instruction manual reads like Greek. Leave this one to the pros.
STREAKING, HIGHLIGHTING AND OTHER FORMS OF MADNESS While both permanent and semi-permanent colours can be used for a full colour wash, only permanent colours can be used for highlighting (50% of the hair is colored, 50% natural) and streaking (75% Natural and 25% colour). Hot colours of the season? Guys go for navy blue, Girls flaunt bright red. If you want the really wild colours like silver and green, youll have to get it done at a parlour cause only Igora and Keune (Dutch manufactured) offer these shades, in India that is. Both are permanent colours. If you cant afford a permanent job, hair mascara is always an option!

WHATS YOUR POISON? Your hair colour choice depends on your natural eye/skin and hair colour, so first determine whether you are a warm or a cool person EYES Cool: Deep brown, black brow, grey, dark blue, Warm: Green, blue. SKIN Cool: Very dark brown, olive, wheatish, milky white, Warm: Brown, bronze. HAIR Cool: Black or light brown, Warm: Deep Brown
Mostly Cools? The best shades, depending on your skin tone, are blue-black, ash browns and blonde.
Mostly Warms? Depending on your skin tone go in for colours like rich browns and gold/red highlights.

Condition your hair a few days before colouring. The better conditioned your hair is, the easier the colour will take and the longer it will last. Stay within two shades of your natural hair colour. You dont have to retouch your roots every other week and you can use the saved up loot to buy stuff that is more important...like music Colour hair that has not been washed for a day. Natural hair oils assist in making the hair colour application more successful.
Self Application only for the Brave-hearted Try bleach to lighten your hair so that the colour catches on easier. Leave the bleach on for as long as necessary. If you want to go fully blonde it might take several applications. A strand test prior to your final bleach is time consuming but necessary. All colour packs contain a colourant cream, developer (to bring out colour), after-colour conditioner, gloves and an instruction booklet (READ THIS!)
